What to Look for When Hiring a Journeyman Electrician
A journeyman licence is a legal requirement rather than a seniority marker, so the first question is not how experienced someone is but whether the licence they hold covers the work you are staffing — in the jurisdiction where the work will happen.
Beyond that, the useful signals are segment and code fluency. An electrician whose experience is entirely residential service is not interchangeable with one who has spent five years on commercial conduit and switchgear, even though both hold the same licence. Ask what they have actually installed and under which adopted code cycle, because the code a jurisdiction has adopted is not always the newest published edition.
Attitude to safety is worth screening for explicitly. This is a trade where one skipped verification step can be fatal, and candidates who treat lockout/tagout and arc-flash practice as paperwork rather than habit are a genuine liability.

Post a Journeyman Electrician Job →Credential Verification Checklist
Verify two separate things, because they fail independently: the individual's licence, and your own business's contractor licence.
Capture the licence number and the issuing authority rather than accepting a photograph of a card — a number can be re-verified by anyone at any time, whereas a photo verifies only that a card existed on the day it was taken. Then check it against that authority's own public search rather than a third-party aggregator, whose data can be stale.
Identify the right authority first. There is no national electrician registry: licensing sits with states and, in some places, with cities. A licence issued by a city department will not appear in a state-level search, so an empty result is not by itself evidence of anything.
Record the expiry date and diarise it. Licences lapse on their own schedule, renewals occasionally fail for administrative reasons, and nobody notifies you when someone else's credential expires. Verifying once at hire is relying on a fact that was true on a single day.
What to Pay: Journeyman Electrician Salary Benchmarks
Be careful with national averages here, and be more careful with anyone quoting a precise premium by licence tier. Federal wage data covers the occupation, not the credential, so there is no authoritative national series comparing journeyman pay to other tiers.
Two pay systems also operate side by side. In markets with a strong union presence the meaningful number is the negotiated scale in the local agreement, which national medians tend to understate. In merit-shop markets pay is set employer by employer. Comparing one against the other is not like-for-like, and neither figure is wrong — they answer different questions.
Hourly pay is the norm in this trade rather than a warning sign, and total earnings can sit well above base: overtime, shift differentials, and per diem on travel work all move the number materially. If you are benchmarking, benchmark against your own local market and be explicit about whether you are quoting base or expected total.
Writing the Job Description
State the licence requirement precisely: the class and the jurisdiction. "Journeyman licence required" leaves an out-of-state candidate unable to tell whether they qualify, and reciprocity is agreed per licence class rather than per state — so the answer genuinely varies.
Name the segment. Residential, commercial, and industrial are different working lives, and a posting that does not say which will attract applicants who withdraw at interview.
Be explicit about travel, shift patterns, and shutdown or turnaround work if they apply. These are among the largest factors in whether a candidate accepts, and burying them wastes everyone's time.
Do not pad the requirements list. Asking for certifications the work does not need narrows your pool for no benefit — and a certification is not a licence, so listing one in place of the licence class does not tell a candidate what you actually require. How to write an electrician job description covers the full structure.
Onboarding Your New Journeyman Electrician
Confirm licence status on the start date rather than relying on the verification you did at offer stage, and record the expiry so the renewal does not arrive unnoticed.
If you employ apprentices, check the supervision ratio before you assign crews. Some states cap how many apprentices one licensed electrician may supervise — Nebraska at three to one, Washington at one trainee per journey-level electrician on journey-level work — and where a ratio exists it constrains crew composition regardless of how capable anyone is.
Continuing education is an individual obligation, not a business one. Renewing your contractor licence does not discharge your electricians' hours, and a licence that lapses takes someone off the work they were staffed to do. Well-run outfits track expiry dates centrally and book the hours as a group well in advance.
